As reported on here already, we lost a tough one yesterday down in Middletown. Overall it was a hard fought, typical NESCAC game that came down to the wire but there were definitely some trends worth noting. The most frustrating on our end is the ground ball battle that Wesleyan won convincingly, according to my stats they out gb'd us 38-24. They flat out won a lot of 50/50 balls that we need to come up with to give ourselves extra possessions or to limit theirs. On the flip side, we cleared the ball very efficiently and I had us going 29 for 31. I have to say that I'm very encouraged with the kind of improvement we made in that area from last week.
Offensively we need to get on the same page and I think after our film session tomorrow our guys will understand how we want to attack a zone defense from here on out. After our game down at Conn a year ago, our guys started to grasp what we wanted to do against a zone and I'm hoping this group will do the same.
It was nice to see Matt Ferrer have a day finishing the ball as he can be a very good crease attackman for us this year. The more attention he can attract inside, the more things will open up for the rest of our guys. His 5th goal of the day was pretty impressive as it was probably an 8 yard shot that was in and out of his stick in the blink of an eye.
Defensively we executed the fundamentals of our defense a little better than last week but still have work to do. Again, the good news is that we were able to get the ball out of our end yesterday.
Next up is Springfield on Wednesday at home, they're starting to play some good lacrosse right now and have had 10 days to get ready for us. We'll learn a lot about our team in the next three days, I can't wait to see what they have tomorrow in practice.
